There are many wonderful products on the market that allow you to have clean, filtered water run through your workplace’s water-main. But what do you do when that’s not an option? While some people carry around disposable plastic bottles to stay hydrated, they are not great for the environment. Arguably, the best reason to avoid single-use water bottles is to mitigate health issues.
Many plastic products and epoxy resins use Bisphenol A (BPA), which has been correlated to conditions such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and the like. And according to Mother Jones magazine, BPA can act as a synthetic estrogen. While estrogen is vital for bone growth and other bodily functions, too much can cause developmental problems, especially in children. While the EPA often gives the okay to products with negligible amounts of BPA, it may be better to reduce your exposure and purchase a safe reusable water bottle since many everyday products are produced with BPA. Water bottles with filters and those made from stainless steel or glass are often good options.
Bottles made out of uncoated stainless steel are often great options since they won’t leach contaminants—like lead, phthalates, BPA, etc.—into your water. These kinds of bottles, like a Klean Kanteen or a Hydro Flask, are easy to clean and very durable since they don’t have liners that melt or degrade in the dishwasher. Many of these bottles also have zero traces of plastic since the lids can be made from silicon or bamboo. If you also want to bring coffee or ice-tea to work, a stainless steel bottle is well suited since it has good insulation.
Copolyester & Filters
The downside of stainless steel is that some bottles can be pricey than plastic ones, especially if you are trying to outfit your office with water bottles for every employee. The good news is that there actually a BPA-free material that is similar to plastic: copolyester. For instance, a Kor One Hydration Vessel is made out of Tritan, a copolyester brand, and it claims to not contain any BPA. Bottles made out of copolyesters are also great because they are durable and will retain their properties even when exposed to other chemicals.
Glass Water Bottles
Like stainless steel, glass is a great material since not chemicals will leach into your water. However, the downside is that glass is very breakable, so this kind of water bottle is best for your office desk and not for on-the-go. However, there are many water bottles, like Lifefactory 22 oz Glass, that come with a silicon or rubber sleeve to prevent them from shattering. Some bottles, like Glasstic Shatterproof Glass water bottles, are made with thicker layers of glass on the inside and plastic on the outside, so the bottle won’t break, but you will still have the good glass materials contacting water instead of plastic.
As you can see, if you can’t get away to the break room for safe drinking water, there are plenty of environmentally-friendly options that you can choose from.
